Stories From JavaStories From Java is a set of illustrations depicting characters adapted from various Javanese folklores and literatures.
The first one is Jatayu, a vulture demi-god from the story of Ramayana, whose told to be fought against Rahwana to rescue Princess Shinta from Rahwana's kidnaping. He then dead with his wings truncated by Rahwana's sword. The second illustration is Cakil, or Buto Cakil --- Cakil the ogre --- whose a humoric characters added in many Javanese wayang lakon (story) as bandit who intercept the ksatrias (warrior) at their way back from the mountain. He always fell by his own Keris (javanese dagger). Next, there is Ken Dedes, a semi-mythological queen of Javanese Kingship, whose told in book of Pararaton (Book of the kings) written in 15th CE. She was very legendary because of her beauty and charm, and believed as the mother of all javanese kingship dinasties. On the fourth, there is Pertiwi, or mother earth, told to be the Goddess of earth in Javanese mythology. The fifth illustration depicted Sutasoma, the central character in the book of Sutasoma, written in 14th CE during the era of Majapahit Empire. Sutasoma is a crown prince who choose to travel out from his father's palace to seek the truth of life and conquering world temptation to reach final purity. __________ Personal Work. Year: 2012 |
